Integrated Genetic Counsellor Service Evaluation

Why this research matters?

Genetic counsellors (GCs) play a vital role in genomic healthcare. Traditionally, GCs have worked within clinical genetics departments, but more recently, they have been seconded to specialty clinics through temporary research fundings to support the integration of genomic testing. Currently, there are no permanently embedded GC services in Australia.

Study aims

This study will evaluate Australia’s first GC-led clinical service, established at the Queensland Children’s Hospital. Using the RE-AIM framework, we will assess the service’s impact on patients, families, and healthcare providers through interviews, surveys, and audits. Findings will provide critical evidence on the effectiveness of embedded GC services, informing future workforce models and the expansion of this approach across Queensland, Australia, and more globally.
